MCKENDRICK
\nAll right then.
\n(to his men)
\nLet’s go.<\/p>\n
SWANN
\nMr. McKendrick, don’t you recognize that pinto?<\/p>\n
MCKENDRICK
\n(doesn’t)
\nWhat?<\/p>\n
SWANN
\nThat’s Lee’s horse.<\/p>\n
HOYT
\nShut up, Swann.<\/p>\n
Now McKendrick understands. He avoids Emmett’s gaze and speaks to Swann.<\/p>\n
MCKENDRICK
\nForget it.<\/p>\n
EMMETT
\nWait a minute. Get down off of there, Augie.<\/p>\n
Augie hops down as Emmett takes the reins. Emmett gives Augie a look and a small nod, and the boy steps away.<\/p>\n
Emmett looks once again at the distinctive brand on the pinto’s flank, two diamonds. Now he leads the pinto around beside McKendrick’s horse so he can see the brand on that animal. McKendrick has to twist in his saddle to watch Emmett. The brands are the same. Emmett looks up at McKendrick. Things are clear between them.<\/p>\n
